Formatting content on Didacte: 4 tips that will make your life easier

At Didacte, we use a slightly modified version of Markdown for our course descriptions, a formatting language that’s simple, yet user-friendly.

Here, we will show you how to use Markdown’s semantic markers that will help you create beautiful descriptions for your courses.

We will use visual examples to illustrate each point. These examples come from the fictitious course: Markdown syntax 101.

By the end of this article, you will be able to bold or italicize words or sentences, create links, and add tables to your description.

To Bold or Italicize Words

It’s very easy. Both work with the help of the asterix, by placing it before and after the word or sentence you have selected.

To italicize a word, place an asterisk *at the beginning and at the end*. To bold a word, place two asterixis **at the beginning and at the end**.

For example, if my course description is as follows:

Learn to use *Markdown* for clear and legible course
descriptions on Didacte to improve how clear and legible they are.

The result will look like this :

To Add a List

If you want to add more than one element in the form of a list, it’s possible to do so.

Lists are particularly good for Objectives fields (if your course has more than one objective) and Target audience (if you course targets different types of people).

List without a specific order:

For example, if my course is for independent trainers and employee training managers, the order doesn’t really matter:

* Independent trainers
* Employee training managers

List with a specific order:

If the course objectives are to first learn the Markdown basics, then to improve the course descriptions:

1. To learn Markdown basics
2. To improve course descriptions

The result will look like this:

To Add a Hyperlink

You can add a hypertext link (also known as hyperlink) of a webpage or a website, or you can use the following technique. The benefit from this technique is that you can personalized the text of the link:

[Text of my link](url address)

For example, if the ultimate objective of my course is to create the most breathtaking description on Didacte:

3. To create the most breathtaking description on [Didacte](https://www.didacte.com/)

The result will look like this:

To Add a Table

Tables can be appropriate on rare occasions, if you have data you would like to share in the form of columns (you’ll need two, at least), for example.

You can have as many rows as you would like, you just have to follow these simple steps. Put this divider - | - between the titles and rows with any content:

Title of the first column | Title of the second column
- | -
First row first column  | First row second column

For example, if I wanted to add a table showing my students in which fields the different Markdown layouts should be used, here is how I would do it:

Table layout | Which fields?
- | -
Format text in **bold**  | All fields
Format text in *italics*  | All fields
Create a hypertext link  | All fields
Create a list | *Objectives* and *Description* fields
Create a table | *Description* field

The result will look like this:
